Vizhinjam Port expansion to double workforce by 2028

Vizhinjam International Seaport, Kerala, is poised for major growth, with plans to double its workforce over the next three years as construction progresses. The expansion includes extending the breakwater and adding two more berths, significantly boosting the port’s cargo-handling capacity.

By 2028, the port is expected to handle around five million containers annually, a substantial increase from its current operations. This capacity boost will require more manpower. At present, the port employs about 700 people, but that number is set to rise sharply across various roles including mooring, security, technical support, crane operations, and driving.

Companies providing essential services at the port are already preparing to scale up. Many are planning to double their staff numbers to meet future demands. For instance, mooring operations alone are projected to require twice the current number of personnel once the new berths are operational.

The government-run skill training centre is playing a vital role in this transition. Over 300 individuals have already been trained, with another 100 currently undergoing training. Recruitment and training are focused on local talent from Vizhinjam and Thiruvananthapuram,. This is to ensure that regional employment opportunities are prioritised.

However, the port still relies on workers from other parts of the country to fill senior and specialised roles. Currently, about 35 per cent of the workforce hails from Vizhinjam, while 69 per cent are from within Kerala. As the port develops further, efforts are underway to bridge skill gaps locally.

The job potential is expected to grow beyond the port itself. Once the planned logistics hubs and warehouses near the economic corridor are established, employment opportunities in the region will expand even further.
