A WhatsApp chat allegedly showing an Indian manager demanding weekend shifts or extended weekday hours has ignited fresh outrage over toxic workplace practices on Reddit. The post, which includes a screenshot shared by a Reddit user, has quickly gained traction, prompting hundreds of users to recount their own experiences of exploitation and burnout in Indian corporate culture.
The viral screenshot appears to capture part of a WhatsApp group message thread. In it, employees express their inability to work on weekends due to prior commitments. The manager, in response, insists that the team must either report to work on Saturdays and Sundays for full eight-hour shifts or stretch their weekday hours by two extra hours daily for three weeks. The message ends with a directive to “prepare your mindset” and be ready on Monday.
While the identity of the author of the post and the source of the screenshot remain unverified, the post struck a nerve among users familiar with the blurring of personal and professional boundaries.
Comments poured in. Many labelled the demand as blatant exploitation. Several users pointed out how managers use informal messaging apps such as WhatsApp to avoid creating a paper trail—preferring undocumented conversations over formal platforms such as Microsoft Teams, which logs all interactions.
The uproar git fuelled with users sharing similar instances of being forced to work overtime without pay or recognition. In one such case, a software developer revealed being coerced into working an additional 20 hours per week—three extra hours every weekday and full weekends—without being compensated for the extra work.
These incidents have once again highlighted the absence of clear work-hour boundaries, a lack of overtime pay, and the emotional toll of hustle culture still rampant in Indian workplaces.
