Google India launches elder care programme to support employees

In a thoughtful move addressing one of the most pressing realities of modern life, Google India has launched a comprehensive Elder Care Programme to support employees caring for aging family members. As India’s population ages and the dual demands of work and caregiving grow, this initiative is a significant step toward fostering a more empathetic and inclusive workplace.

Announcing the programme on LinkedIn, Shraddhanjali Rao, head-HR, Google India, spoke candidly about the emotional weight and responsibility that comes with supporting elderly loved ones while managing a demanding professional life. She shared her own reflections on how the hands that once guided our first steps often come to lean on us in return. For many, she said, this is not just a metaphor—it’s a lived experience.

“As our lives unfold,” she wrote, “a beautiful truth emerges: the hands that once guided our first steps now lean on our own for support.” Her post resonated with many who find themselves navigating the complexities of elder care while striving to be present and productive at work.

The Google Elder Care Programme is designed to provide employees peace of mind by ensuring their elderly family members are cared for with dignity, compassion and timely support. Acknowledging the challenges employees face in balancing work with caregiving responsibilities, the programme offers structured services that cover emotional, physical, and safety needs.

The first pillar, Emotional Wellbeing, addresses the growing issue of social isolation among the elderly. Through regular check-in calls, virtual engagement sessions, and curated support groups, the programme fosters human connection and emotional support, helping elders feel less alone and more engaged.

The second pillar, Physical Wellbeing, focuses on healthcare support. It includes tele-consultations, routine body check-ups, quarterly home visits, and access to trained home-care professionals—ensuring that elders receive consistent medical attention and preventive care.

Lastly, Safety Support is about being prepared for emergencies. The programme offers 24/7 emergency coordination, doctor-on-call services, ambulance evacuation, and guidance on making homes elder-friendly. These features help create a secure environment while offering employees reliable backup during critical times.

The initiative reflects Google India’s ongoing commitment to understanding and supporting the multifaceted lives of its employees. It further reinforces Google’s broader philosophy of employee-centric innovation—not just in products, but in workplace policies that promote well-being, inclusivity, and support across all life stages.

In her closing thoughts, Rao paid tribute to those who “now steady the hands that once guided them,” calling their patience, resilience, and strength “an inspiration”. With this initiative, Google India has offered more than a policy—it has offered recognition, relief, and respect to those walking the challenging path of elder caregiving.
