A recent post on the anonymous workplace discussion app, Blind, has revealed shocking news about an Amazon employee. The post revealed that a senior employee at Amazon has been collecting a substantial salary for over a year without engaging in any meaningful work.
The employee, who had previously been laid off by Google, confessed to intentionally putting in minimal effort since joining Amazon 1.5 years ago.
According to the post, the employee works only about eight hours a week, primarily attending meetings. During this time, he claims to have completed just a handful of tasks, including resolving seven support tickets and creating an automated dashboard. Using ChatGPT, he admitted that the entire work took only three days but was reported as a three-month project. Despite this minimal output, the employee continues to draw a substantial total compensation package of approximately $370,000 (around Rs 3.1 crore).
The employee, who holds the title of senior technical programme manager (TPM), also described his current role as largely consisting of saying no to other teams attempting to integrate with his team, ensuring that others take on the majority of the work. Surprisingly, he has not received any warnings or performance improvement plans (PIPs) from his superiors, leaving him uncertain about how much longer he can maintain this situation.
The post quickly gained traction on Blind, attracting over 30,000 views and numerous comments from other users. Many expressed envy or amusement at the situation, with some jokingly referring to the poster’s role as a “dream job” and others humorously suggesting he may be on track for a leadership position.
This revelation has sparked discussions about the challenges of accountability in large organisations. This also highlights the potential for employees to exploit the system, particularly in high-paying roles where oversight may be limited.
