Telangana government employees have renewed their demand for a five-day working week, arguing that reducing the number of office days could help conserve resources while improving workplace efficiency.
It is reported that in a representation submitted to Chief Secretary Sanjay Jaju, employee representatives have proposed a schedule of 10 am to 5.30 pm from Monday to Friday, with each working day comprising seven and a half hours. They have argued that the arrangement would not place an additional financial burden on the state government and could instead generate savings.
The demand comes as Telangana faces challenges in managing the adverse effects of the El Niño phenomenon. Employees have suggested that fewer days of commuting and office operations could help reduce electricity and water consumption, as well as pollution caused by road traffic.
They have also argued that a five-day schedule could improve employee efficiency without affecting the government’s expenditure. The proposal places resource conservation and workplace productivity at the centre of the case for changing the existing workweek.
The latest representation renews the employees’ push for a shorter working week, with the state government yet to announce a decision on the proposal.
