Vedanta has strengthened its focus on workforce inclusion, with 75 transgender employees now working across its various business verticals. The hiring push, which began in 2022, reflects a structured effort to integrate diversity into core operations rather than limit it to symbolic representation.

The transgender workforce is spread across key group companies, including Hindustan Zinc, Vedanta Aluminium, Sesa Goa, FACOR, and Cairn Oil & Gas. Employees are engaged across a wide range of functions such as operations, finance, logistics, HR, healthcare, and security, indicating deeper workforce integration across technical and corporate roles.

To support this expansion, the company has introduced a set of inclusive policies aimed at enabling long-term career growth. These include gender affirmation support with financial assistance and leave provisions, housing support within company townships, education assistance, and structured nonboarding through buddy programmes. Efforts have also been made to address systemic barriers, such as access to housing and identity documentation, through partnerships with external organisations.

Infrastructure changes, including gender-neutral facilities, and continuous sensitisation programmes for employees and communities are part of the broader inclusion strategy. Internal initiatives and leadership engagement further aim to create awareness and sustain workplace integration.

“I was initially apprehensive about being accepted, but the culture here is truly inclusive. From gender-sensitive policies to mental-wellness sessions and unbiased hiring practices, I’ve consistently felt seen, respected and empowered. My colleagues recognise me as an equal contributor, and this is a place where both my identity and expertise are genuinely valued. Hindustan Zinc’s support has not only helped me thrive but also enabled me advocate for others. It has been a truly transformative journey” said a transgender employee working in Asset Integrity at Hindustan Zinc.

The company’s approach signals a shift toward building inclusive workforce models that prioritise dignity, accessibility, and equitable opportunities across business functions.
