Reddit post on Indian company sparks debate about cross-cultural workplace issues

A Reddit post by a US-based professional has gone viral, bringing to fore the challenges of working remotely for Indian companies while based overseas. The anonymous user detailed a frustrating month-long experience working for an India-headquartered firm that had hired him to establish operations in the US.

According to the post, the worker faced a lack of clarity in reporting lines, with conflicting directions from multiple supervisors. Despite being hired to lead US market-entry efforts, the employee reported that barely any training had been provides. Instead, they were expected to follow strict schedules, and submit to daily check-ins, and micromanagement by their Indian counterparts.

The worker said expectations were vague, but accountability was high. Assigned tasks such as cold calling came without clear strategy or support, and feedback was described as unconstructive and even disrespectful. The employee was also worried about job security and a growing sense of isolation, especially after a tense virtual meeting where a senior colleague allegedly reprimanded them harshly for perceived inaction.

The Reddit post invited varied responses from users across the globe. Some empathised with the poster’s experience, sharing similar stories of confusion, hierarchy issues and lack of communication when working with teams based in India. Others advised the individual to prioritise cultural fit and consider exiting the role if it was proving to be unsuitable.

While some defended Indian work culture as fast-paced and demanding, many highlighted the growing pains of companies expanding internationally without adequate onboarding, coordination, or cultural adaptation.

The post is making people think about the challenges and dynamics of remote work, cross-border leadership styles, and the significance of clear expectations in hybrid teams.
