ByteDance plans $330 billion employee share buyback amid revenue surge

The move reflects the Chinese technology giant’s continued growth and strong financial position despite regulatory pressures overseas

ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, is preparing to launch a new employee share buyback programme this autumn, valuing the company at over $330 billion. The move reflects the Chinese technology giant’s continued growth and strong financial position despite regulatory pressures overseas.

Under the planned buyback, employees will be offered $200.41 per share, representing a 5.5 per cent increase from the $189.90 per share offered in its last repurchase programme six months ago. That earlier scheme valued the company at about $315 billion. The upcoming buyback underscores ByteDance’s commitment to providing liquidity for its workforce while remaining privately held.

The valuation has gone up on the back of robust revenue growth. In the second quarter, ByteDance’s revenue jumped 25 per cent year-on-year, reaching approximately $48 billion. This performance further strengthened its position among the world’s largest social-media companies by sales, ahead of Meta, which generated $42.3 billion in the same period. ByteDance’s first-quarter revenue had already crossed $43 billion, indicating sustained momentum across its platforms.

Unlike many late-stage private companies that rely on external capital for employee liquidity, ByteDance funds its buybacks directly from its own balance sheet. This approach highlights its financial flexibility and profitability, particularly given its strong domestic market performance. The company has also been aggressively investing in artificial intelligence, from infrastructure to model development, cementing its status as one of China’s AI leaders.

Despite its financial strength, ByteDance continues to face regulatory headwinds in the US. Lawmakers have raised national security concerns over its Chinese ownership, and a divestment deadline for TikTok’s US assets has been extended to 17 September.
