India is taking steps to strengthen its fast-growing maintenance, repair and operations (MRO) sector through a renewed focus on workforce development. Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya has partnered with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation to redesign Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME) training and align it with future industry needs.
Under the collaboration, the two institutions will jointly develop a three-year BSc programme in AME. The curriculum is expected to combine academic learning with regulatory standards and practical industry exposure. The aim is to create a more structured and quality-driven training ecosystem while making aviation maintenance careers more attractive to young professionals.
As part of the partnership, GSV will also serve as a research partner to DGCA in areas such as Sustainable Aviation Fuels and related technologies. In addition, specialised programmes will be introduced to upskill DGCA personnel, supporting capacity building within the aviation regulator.
The initiative builds on GSV’s existing industry linkages with global and domestic players, including Airbus, Safran, and GMR School of Aviation. The university already offers aviation-focused technical and management programmes designed in collaboration with industry.
The broader objective of the initiative is to reduce India’s reliance on foreign MRO services and develop domestic capabilities. By integrating hands-on training, simulation-based learning, and partnerships with original equipment manufacturers, the programme aims to create a skilled workforce capable of supporting India’s expanding aviation sector and enhancing its global competitiveness.
