HDFC Bank reported a net reduction in its workforce during FY26, but the decline was concentrated in non-supervisory roles even as the bank expanded its management cadre and accelerated investments in AI training.

According to the bank’s FY26 Integrated Annual Report, total employee strength stood at 2,11,178 as of 31 March, 2026, compared with 2,14,521 a year earlier, reflecting a net reduction of 3,343 employees.

The workforce composition, however, changed significantly. Non-supervisory employee strength declined by 8,153, falling from 1,70,950 to 1,62,797. At the same time, the bank added 4,810 employees across management roles. Senior management increased by 15 employees, middle management by 1,252 and junior management by 3,543.

The annual report does not attribute the workforce changes to layoffs, automation or any specific factor, noting only the year-on-year change in employee strength.

Alongside these changes, HDFC Bank expanded its focus on digital transformation and AI capability building. The bank said it continued integrating generative AI and digital-first systems into HR processes, including employee onboarding, salary account opening, compensation management and recognition programmes.

During FY26, more than 50,600 employees underwent AI training through the bank’s GenAI Academy and related programmes, while over 2,100 employees received Microsoft Copilot training. Overall, learning initiatives reached more than 2.1 lakh employees, with total learning hours exceeding 1.36 crore. Average learning hours per employee increased to 64.66 hours, up from 58.25 hours in the previous year.

Employee turnover rose marginally to 23.1 per cent from 22.6 per cent in FY25. The bank also reported a slight improvement in workforce diversity, with women accounting for 27 per cent of the workforce and 16 per cent of management positions.

The FY26 disclosures reflect a changing workforce strategy, with HDFC Bank investing in leadership capacity and AI readiness while reshaping its employee mix.
