SpaceX insider share-lockup expiry opens trading access to 912 million shares

The release of additional shares has raised concerns among investors about potential selling pressure and increased stock volatility

SpaceX is set to face its first major test as a publicly-traded company this week, with the expiry of its initial insider share- lockup period allowing employees and early investors to sell their holdings for the first time since the company’s listing.

Around 912 million insider-held shares will become eligible for trading after the restriction ends on Thursday, 6 August, 2026, more than doubling the number of shares currently available in the public market, according to reports.

The release of additional shares has raised concerns among investors about potential selling pressure and increased stock volatility. SpaceX shares have already seen fluctuations following its public debut, which briefly pushed the company’s valuation above $2 trillion before the stock price declined.

The lockup expiry gives thousands of employees and early investors an opportunity to convert years of equity holdings into cash. Many employees who accumulated company shares during their tenure now face decisions on whether to sell, hold their investments or use other financial options.

The development is being closely monitored because lockup expiries often lead to increased price movements, as a larger number of shareholders gain the ability to trade.

SpaceX’s public float remains relatively limited compared with many established companies, meaning even moderate insider selling could have a noticeable impact on share prices.

The latest share release is only the first phase of a broader unlocking schedule, with additional batches of insider shares expected to become available in the coming months. A larger tranche is expected after the company releases its financial results later this year.

The company is also preparing to announce its first quarterly earnings report as a listed entity, which will provide investors with greater insight into its financial performance.

The market response to the lockup expiry could influence investor sentiment towards other high-profile technology companies preparing for public listings.
