Tech Mahindra employee protest puts workplace grievance handling under spotlight

The dispute centres on R Bhavana, a software engineer who has alleged unfair treatment during her employment

A workplace dispute involving Tech Mahindra and a Hyderabad-based employee has drawn public attention after allegations of workplace harassment, medical leave-related pressure and termination were amplified through social media.

The dispute centres on R Bhavana, a software engineer who has alleged unfair treatment during her employment and claimed that the company eventually terminated her. She has also raised concerns about how her grievances were handled and staged a protest outside Tech Mahindra’s Hyderabad office.

Social-media posts about the protest described Bhavana as seeking action on issues including pending allowances, notice periods and protection against what she characterised as arbitrary termination. The posts also claimed that climate activist Ruchith supported the protest. These claims could not be independently verified.

According to reports citing Bhavana’s allegations, she faced difficulties after sustaining a serious injury and taking medical leave. She claimed she was repeatedly asked to return to work before fully recovering and received communications warning of disciplinary action if she did not report to the office.

She also alleged that she faced scrutiny over her movements during work hours and that her concerns following a medical emergency involving her daughter were not adequately addressed.

Tech Mahindra has disputed the claim that Bhavana was terminated and said she remains an active employee. The company said she joined its Hyderabad office on 26 March, 2026, and raised the termination allegation on 23 July. It said she was informed that her employment continued and that her July salary was processed normally.

The company acknowledged that a communication referring to “abandonment of services” was issued on 22 July but said the separation was never implemented.

Tech Mahindra also said Bhavana had taken 27 working days of leave between joining and 22 July, including 12 planned and 15 unplanned leave days. The company said it had repeatedly asked her to resume work and submit medical documentation.

The conflicting accounts have shifted attention beyond the individual dispute to questions around employee grievance mechanisms, communication during medical leave and how workplace complaints are resolved.

With the matter now playing out publicly, the episode also highlights how employment disputes can quickly gain wider attention when employees turn to social media and public demonstrations to seek resolution.
