Air India SATS Airport Services (AISATS), a ground-handling joint venture between the Tata Group and Singapore-based SATS, has asked four senior officials to resign after a video emerged of an office celebration just days after the Air India crash on 12 June.
Those asked to step down include two senior vice presidents, the chief operating officer, and the head of training. The resignations come amid disciplinary concerns following the circulation of internal footage showing a DJ-led event at AISATS’s Gurugram office on 20 June.
The video, which went viral on social media, depicted approximately 30 employees dancing and celebrating amidst loud music and flashing lights. The timing of the event sparked widespread outrage due to its proximity to the devastating crash of Air India flight AI171.
The crash, a tragic incident involving a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner en route from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, claimed 275 lives when the aircraft collided with a student hostel in Meghaninagar shortly after take-off. The disaster left only one survivor and caused extensive damage, deeply impacting the nation.
AISATS clarified that the resignations were part of an effort to uphold corporate values and accountability under intense public scrutiny. The company highlighted that the employees’ actions did not reflect its standards of empathy or professionalism, especially in the aftermath of a national tragedy.
The incident has prompted AISATS to initiate internal reviews of workplace conduct, particularly during sensitive periods following aviation disasters. It underscores the aviation industry’s responsibility to maintain decorum and respect in honour of those affected by such tragedies.
This development adds to the pressure on aviation-related organisations to demonstrate accountability and sensitivity during crises, as public and industry stakeholders demand higher standards of corporate behaviour.
