A Delhi-based café has drawn sharp criticism on social media after a post intended to celebrate an employee was widely mistaken for a condolence announcement. The controversy erupted after Wongdhen Cafe shared an Instagram graphic to recognise one of its staff members as “Employee of the Month”.
The visual design of the post quickly became the focal point of criticism. The graphic featured a muted colour palette with clouds, white flowers and birds in flight surrounding the employee’s photograph. The layout and imagery led many viewers to initially assume it was a memorial or tribute poster rather than a celebratory announcement.
Adding to the confusion was the opening line of the graphic, which began in a formal tone before revealing the employee recognition message. While the café attempted to offset the somber design with a caption written in dark humour, the effort appeared to backfire. Several users said they judged the post within seconds, long before reading the caption or understanding the intent.
Screenshots of the post circulated widely across platforms, prompting mixed reactions. A section of users appreciated the humour and creativity, but a larger group criticised the mismatch between intent and presentation. Many pointed out that employee- recognition posts should feel uplifting and energetic, not somber or ambiguous. Others noted that visual communication plays a decisive role in shaping perception and that poor design choices can overpower even positive messages.
As calls grew for the café to revise or remove the post, the episode sparked a broader discussion on branding and sensitivity in workplace communication. The incident served as a reminder that appreciation efforts, especially when shared publicly, require careful thought not just in wording, but also in visual tone and context.
