Google has announced a $50 million investment to expand skilled trades training across the US with the aim of preparing more than 3,00,000 workers for careers in sectors facing growing labour shortages.
The initiative will support organisations involved in apprenticeship and workforce-development programmes spanning over 20 states. The funding is expected to strengthen training pathways in trades such as electrical work, welding, pipefitting, sheet metal, manufacturing, and heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVACR).
The programme will channel resources to training providers that work alongside 14 labour unions and four trade and contractor associations. Google said the effort is designed to address the increasing demand for skilled workers required to build and maintain critical infrastructure, including advanced energy systems, network grids and manufacturing facilities.
In addition, the United Association’s International Training Fund will develop a long-term strategy to expand training opportunities across several technical trades, including plumbing, welding and HVACR.
Google said the initiative builds on its previous investments in workforce development, including programmes supporting electrical workers and manufacturing employees. Through the latest commitment, the company also plans to increase access to AI-related skills within trade occupations, reflecting the growing integration of technology across industries.
The funding is being provided through Google.org’s AI Opportunity Fund, which focuses on expanding economic opportunities through education and skills development. According to Google, the latest investment forms part of a broader effort to create collaborative solutions involving businesses, industry groups and training institutions to prepare workers for the jobs of the future.
The company noted that, since 2022, it has invested more than $1 billion globally in skilling initiatives aimed at helping individuals develop digital and AI capabilities. With the new programme, Google hopes to strengthen the pipeline of qualified workers needed to support the country’s evolving infrastructure and industrial landscape.
