Google is implementing a stricter return-to-office policy for thousands of its employees. This time the emphasis is more on in-person presence and uniform work arrangements. Employees working remotely but living within 50 miles of a Google office are mandated to embrace the hybrid model with three days a week spent in the physical office.
The updated policy is set to take full effect by September 2025.
The change is part of Google’s efforts to establish consistent norms across teams and reintroduce more structured work routines. Employees in Search, Ads, Commerce, Core Engineering and other key departments are among those most directly impacted. Exceptions have been made for teams such as DeepMind, YouTube, and Google Cloud, but most other staff members working out of the US in specific technical and marketing functions have been told to comply mandatorily or opt for voluntary exit packages.
In parallel, the company has rolled out a Voluntary Exit Programme (VEP) aimed at workers who may be struggling with performance expectations or are not aligned with the company’s current direction. This programme offers assistance to employees who may feel they lack engagement with their roles, allowing them to move on.
This policy indicates how eager Google is to do away with remote flexibility. Since early 2025 Google has been gradually scaling back remote work privileges preferring to focus on collaborative innovation, employee accountability, and cohesiveness in teams.
Google is only upholding it’s view that regular face-to-face interaction is crucial to its operating rhythm and long-term goals—especially as the company sharpens its focus on AI and next-generation infrastructure.
