This product development competition for students results in innovative hardware and software products that have the potential to transform the tech world.

The 3rd edition of Smart India Hackathon (SIH) 2019 was launched in New Delhi on August 29, 2018.

This three-year old product development competition, will witness participation of students from various institutions approved by the UGC and AICTE, as well as IISc, IITs and NITs. The participants will compete to come up with innovative technical solutions to the problems posed to them.

Speaking on the occasion, the Union Minister for Human Resources Development, Prakash Javadekar, said that in this new edition of SIH-2019 over 1 Lakh+ students from around 3000 institutions will have the opportunity to work on challenges faced within the Public Sector Organizations and the Union Ministries. And for the 1st time, it will also include problem statements from industry as well as NGOs.

“While students will get a chance to create world class solutions for some of the top organizations in the world, it would also be a chance for organizations to meet the brightest young minds and brand themselves from hiring perspective,” he added.

Javadekar informed that the students from IISc, IITs, NITs and AICTE/UGC approved institutions will also compete to creatively solve problems and offer technical solutions

Registrations are open from October onwards. Participation of approx. 1,50,000 students is expected from more than 3,000 institutes across the country.

There will be two sub-editions —a 36-hour long software product development contest, and a five-day long hardware-product development competition.

The past editions of the contest have witnessed some extraordinary innovations, some of which were picked up for further application/adoption. Secured pen-drives and development of robotic equipment for safety on unmanned railway gates were just some of the novelties that came out of the last two Hackathons.
