Under the revised guidelines, employees are permitted a maximum of 35 business days per year without project allocation

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has introduced a new associate deployment policy that requires employees to be assigned to active projects for at least 225 business days a year. Starting 12 June, this policy will help increase utilisation rates and reduce the time associates spend unassigned.
The revised guidelines allow employees a maximum of 35 business days per year without project allocation. If they exceed this limit, the consequences can be seen in the form limited career progression, reduced compensation, or even tenure.  The company’s Resource Management Group (RMG) will monitor deployments closely and match associates to projects based on their skillsets and business needs.
The unallocated employees during any period are expected to proactively look out for new opportunities through their unit or regional RMG. They are also encouraged to dedicate four to six hours per day to upskilling through platforms such as iEvolve, Fresco Play, and LinkedIn Learning. In addition, they are required to complete mandatory and recommended training, attend physical sessions when suggested, and use AI-based tools such as the Gen AI interview coach to stay prepared for upcoming roles.
To ensure smoother project assignments, TCS has reinforced the requirement for physical office presence. Exceptions to remote work will only be granted in emergencies and must be approved by the RMG. The policy also discourages frequent short-term allocations across multiple projects, warning that such patterns may trigger HR reviews and potential disciplinary actions.
This new policy is TCS’ strategy to align individual performance with business demands. By reducing bench time and promoting continuous learning, the company hopes to build a more agile and project-ready workforce even while ensuring that the organisation becomes more efficient on the whole.
