The Gujarat government has launched a fresh review exercise for employees above the age of 55 across departments. A new circular issued by the Directorate of Accounts and Treasury has directed all state government departments to submit records of employees from Group I to Group IV who will turn 55 between October and December 2026.
The review framework includes 11 separate evaluation points that departments must submit to the government. Authorities have fixed 30 May, 2026, as the deadline for sending complete reports. Once the data is compiled, department-wise assessments will begin, after which the government may initiate compulsory retirement proceedings against selected employees.
The move is being seen as part of a wider administrative clean-up aimed at improving efficiency in government offices. Employees with weak performance records, disciplinary concerns, pending investigations, or repeated complaints could face compulsory retirement under public interest provisions.
Departments have been asked to conduct a detailed review of the service history of these employees. Furthermore, authorities will examine confidential performance reports from the past 10 years, including any adverse remarks recorded during the period. Attendance records, work output, conduct, and disciplinary history will also be reviewed carefully before any decision is taken.
The government has additionally sought information on long medical leave, unauthorised absence from duty, suspension history, and any pending court or Anti-Corruption Bureau-related cases. Physical and mental fitness of employees will also be assessed as part of the scrutiny process.
The exercise is believed to help remove employees considered inefficient or negligent, while also improving public service delivery. According to sources, several departments have been carrying employees with consistently poor output for years, affecting productivity and public perception.
