HR’s holiday calendar error wins employee appreciation

A company’s decision to honour an accidentally declared public holiday has sparked discussion online, with many praising the HR team for prioritising employees over correcting an administrative error.

The incident was shared by an employee on Reddit’s r/IndianWorkplace forum, where they explained that the company’s internal holiday calendar had listed the wrong date for an upcoming festival.

According to the post, HR later realised the mistake, but by then many employees had already made personal plans based on the announced holiday.

Rather than cancelling the leave at the last minute and asking employees to report to work, the company decided to retain the mistakenly declared holiday. The actual festival date, which was originally intended to be the holiday, would instead be observed as a regular working day.

The employee said they had expected the company to reverse the decision once the error was discovered. Instead, they were surprised that the organisation chose to accept the mistake and avoid disrupting employees’ plans.

The post generated mixed reactions on Reddit. Several users described the move as employee-friendly, noting that many organisations would have withdrawn the holiday despite the inconvenience it would have caused staff.

Others argued that the company could have declared both days as holidays, although many acknowledged that doing so would not be practical for most businesses.

Many commenters also said the decision reflected positively on the organisation’s culture, as the company chose to absorb the impact of its own error rather than shifting the burden onto its employees. They added that such actions can strengthen employee trust and reinforce the perception that the organisation values its workforce.
