The Telangana government is likely to take a decision soon on revising autorickshaw fares, Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar said on 1 September 2026. The fare structure has remained unchanged since 2012, despite rising operating costs.
Reportedly, the minister was speaking at Bus Bhavan about initiatives in the Transport department and the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC).
Alongside the proposed fare revision, the government plans to establish a welfare board for autorickshaw workers. It will also provide financial assistance of Rs 1.5 lakh to help retrofit petrol and diesel autorickshaws in Hyderabad.
The measures come as the state looks to address the concerns of transport workers while also moving towards cleaner mobility. The government is also examining a regulatory framework for bike taxis. Under the proposed system, such vehicles could be brought under regulation through yellow number plates.
The Minister also outlined developments within TGSRTC. He said the corporation has added 2,932 buses to its fleet, including 1,024 electric buses. A further 2,200 electric buses are planned for the Greater Hyderabad Zone.
TGSRTC has also expanded its network, with services introduced on 370 new routes in Hyderabad. The corporation is extending services to areas that previously had limited or no bus connectivity.
According to the minister, the corporation’s passenger occupancy has increased from 67 to 89 per cent.
The expansion is also being accompanied by fresh hiring. Recruitment notifications have been issued for 4,538 positions. Hiring for 1,000 driver and 743 worker positions has already been completed, while the government has approved recruitment for another 1,500 conductors.
Prabhakar said union elections would be held before the process of completing the merger of RTC employees with the government is taken forward.
He also said RTC employees had received two Pay Revision Commissions and five instalments of Dearness Allowance, with no DA arrears currently pending.
The Minister further highlighted the Mahalakshmi scheme, under which women have made 347.36 crore free bus journeys so far. The scheme has resulted in estimated savings of Rs 12,167 crore for women passengers, according to the government.
