Tripura has launched a green skilling programme aimed at preparing more than 1,000 people for jobs emerging from the state’s shift towards renewable energy. The Green Skilling Programme ‘Unnayan’ will train youth and women, along with ITI graduates, Class XII pass-outs, diploma engineers, technicians and members of self-help groups.
The programme is part of the Tripura Clean Energy Roadmap 2035, launched alongside the Transforming Renewable Energy Acceleration in Tripura (TREAT) scheme. The skilling initiative will focus particularly on solar applications, with participants receiving certification from a Government of India-accredited agency.
The programme comes as Tripura plans to significantly expand its renewable energy infrastructure. Upcoming projects include rooftop solar installations, battery energy storage, floating solar and hydropower projects, as well as exploration of green hydrogen. The state is also planning to modernise Agartala’s power distribution network through underground cabling, GIS substations, SCADA and optical-fibre communication.
Reportedly, the expanding renewable infrastructure will require a trained workforce capable of installing, operating and maintaining these systems. The initiative is therefore intended to build technical capabilities alongside the state’s clean-energy investments.
The Asian Development Bank, which supported the roadmap, said the transition should create opportunities for youth, women, farmers, entrepreneurs and local communities. The broader clean-energy plan projects power demand in Tripura to rise from around 380 MW currently to 520 MW by 2030 and 800 MW by 2035.
The initiative positions green skilling as a key part of Tripura’s clean-energy transition, with training and certification aimed at creating a local talent pool for the renewable energy sector.
