Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) added 4,500 employees in the September quarter, with nearly 80 per cent of new hires bringing digital and new-age technology skills. Around 25 to 30 per cent of these recruits had specialised artificial intelligence (AI) skills, reflecting the IT major’s focus on capabilities aligned with evolving client requirements, according to a report by the Press Trust of India (PTI).
The company is expected to maintain this hiring mix, with the required talent available in the market. The strategy reflects TCS’ efforts to strengthen its capabilities in AI and other emerging technologies as businesses expand their use of digital solutions.
The company has not disclosed a detailed breakdown of the specific roles or skills covered under its broader digital and new-age technology categories.
Alongside specialised technology skills, TCS continues to place importance on experience and domain knowledge. Experienced engineers bring an understanding of technology landscapes and business requirements, which can help organisations apply emerging technologies to practical business challenges. A willingness to learn and adapt remains important as employees navigate changing technology demands.
AI-related business accounted for 10 per cent of TCS’s overall revenue in the September quarter. The company expects larger volumes of AI deals to support margin improvement as clients expand their engagements and extend successful projects across different business functions.
Customers often begin by deploying AI in a specific area before expanding its use to other functions after assessing the results. This approach could create opportunities for technology service providers as organisations move from limited AI projects to broader implementation.
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) reported a total contract value (TCV) of $9.6 billion for the September quarter. However, the company did not disclose the portion attributable specifically to AI-related deals. Its approach to classifying contracts as AI deals remains conservative, even as AI becomes increasingly integrated into its existing work.
The hiring mix and revenue contribution indicate the growing importance of digital and AI capabilities in TCS’ business strategy, with recruitment focused on skills that can support evolving client needs.
