Could a 2 pm to 10 pm shift be better than the traditional 9 am to 5 pm?

An employee has argued that the later shift allows people to start their day without the rush associated with traditional office hours

For decades, the 9-to-5 workday has been treated as the default rhythm of professional life. Mornings are spent getting ready for work, afternoons are filled with meetings and tasks, and evenings are often left for everything else. However, as employees increasingly question whether traditional schedules actually work for them, alternative shifts are drawing attention.

A recent social-media post has sparked a debate over whether working from 2 pm to 10 pm could offer a better work-life balance than the conventional 9-to-5 routine.

The employee argued that the later shift allows people to start their day without the rush associated with traditional office hours. Instead of reaching home exhausted at the end of a 9-to-5 day, employees working the 2 pm to 10 pm schedule can complete errands, household chores and personal activities before work begins.

According to the post, the shift also makes everyday tasks easier because mornings tend to be quieter. Appointments can be scheduled without having to take time away from work, while gyms, grocery stores and other places are generally less crowded.

The employee also drew attention to the fact that starting the workday after a full night’s sleep can make it easier to be productive. Rather than spending the morning rushing through personal responsibilities before heading to work, employees have several hours to complete chores and relax before logging in.

The post was based on the employee’s experience of working remotely from Spain while following US time zones. For them, the schedule meant finishing work at 10 pm and being able to go to bed shortly afterwards, without the long gap between finishing work and sleeping that can come with some late-night shifts.

The post highlights how the definition of a productive workday can vary depending on where employees live, their responsibilities and their personal routines. A later start may be particularly attractive to those who prefer slower mornings or need to manage appointments and household responsibilities during conventional business hours.

At the same time, such a schedule may not work equally well for everyone. Employees with children, family commitments or limited availability in the evenings may find a 2 pm to 10 pm shift more difficult. It can also reduce overlap with colleagues working conventional hours, particularly when teams are spread across different time zones.
