Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has announced a complete stop to service extensions and re-employment for government employees in Himachal Pradesh after March 31. The move marks a clear shift in workforce policy, aimed at bringing more structure and consistency across departments.
Speaking in Shimla, Sukhu said the long-standing practice of granting extensions after retirement has now been discontinued. However, he clarified that employees who have already been given extensions will be allowed to continue only until their approved tenure ends, as per existing orders.
The government has introduced a limited exception for the healthcare sector. To ensure that essential medical services are not affected, retired doctors may be reappointed on a case-by-case basis. This is especially relevant for associate professors in medical colleges, where continuity in teaching and patient care remains critical.
The decision reflects the state government’s intent to streamline employment practices while balancing operational needs in sensitive sectors like healthcare.
