A WhatsApp exchange between a manager and an injured employee is stirring widespread outrage online, after it exposed a disturbing lack of empathy in the workplace. The viral conversation shows a manager repeatedly urging a staff member to report for duty, despite the employee suffering a fractured leg in a recent bike accident.
The chat begins with the manager asking why the employee is absent. Upon learning the worker is hospitalised with a broken leg, the manager responds that the employee is required for the Friday shifts. When the employee explains that doctors have advised bed rest, the boss presses on, offering to provide a chair instead. The conversation escalates as the manager guilt-trips the worker for taking leave just two weeks after joining the company.
Eventually, the employee makes the process easy by opting to quit.
The screenshots have resonated deeply with social-media users, prompting many to share similar stories of insensitive and exploitative managers. One user recalled being told to “cough in silence” during a meeting while battling illness. Another shared how a promised chair never materialised after being pressured to return to work with tendonitis.
One of the most alarming stories came from a cancer survivor. After being denied time off for a medical appointment, she was later diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Following hospitalisation and treatment, she received a call from HR asking when she would return to work. She responded by expplaining how taking care for herself is more important.
The incident has sparked conversations about toxic leadership, lack of compassion, and the pressing need for employee well-being to be taken seriously at all levels.
