‘Mai Bik Gaya’: Viral resignation letter sparks conversation about pay hikes

As salaries remain flat across many sectors and inflation eats into take-home pay, employees are rethinking their loyalty

A blunt and unapologetically honest resignation letter is making waves on social media, sparking both amusement and reflection about India’s job market. Shared by Shubham Gune, founder and CEO, Hinglish, the viral post features a resignation message from an employee named Dayitva Shah. The letter reads simply:

“Hi sir, mai bik gaya, samne wali company 4 paisa jada de rahi hai. Regards, Dayitva Shah.”

With its raw honesty, the note struck a chord online. Some LinkedIn users responded with jokes, imagining the manager’s reply—“Thik hai, udhar koi vacancy ho to batana” (Okay, let me know if there’s a vacancy there). Others noted the confidence it takes to write such a message—especially when the employee seemingly didn’t hit ‘send’.

While the tone was humorous, the post draws attention to a growing trend in India’s workforce. Many professionals are switching jobs not just for marginal pay hikes, but also to keep up with rising living costs. As salaries remain flat across many sectors and inflation eats into take-home pay, employees are rethinking their loyalty.

Recent surveys suggest that compensation remains the top driver for job changes, followed closely by flexible work options and career- growth opportunities. The viral post, though made in jest, reflects the frustration of many workers who feel undervalued—and the increasing readiness to call it out, even with humour.

In the end, the message may be simple, but it echoes a reality that’s far from light: the price of talent is rising, and honesty, even cheeky honesty, is becoming the voice of a new workforce.
