Meta offering $100 million bonuses to lure OpenAI talent?

Artificial intelligence (AI) talent is clearly in high demand. Meta, it is reported, has offered massive bonuses—up to $100 million—to recruit top engineers from OpenAI. As major tech companies race to build powerful AI models, elite researchers are being courted with unprecedented compensation packages.
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is endeavouring to strengthen its AI capabilities. The company is putting together a new superintelligence unit and has made high-profile moves in connection to the same. As part of this, it has invested $14.3 billion in Scale AI. Alexandr Wang,  CEO of Scale AI, has joined Meta to take charge of this new initiative. Looks like Meta is leaving no stone unturned to keep pace with competitors such as OpenAI and Google.
In recent times, media reports have said that Meta has been trying to attract key OpenAI employees by offering them exceptionally large signing bonuses and salaries. However, it is also reported that none of the top OpenAI staff have accepted these offers. But it is quite clear that the demand for professionals with the ability to shape the future of artificial intelligence is growing.
Evidently, AI engineers,  particularly those specialising in developing frontier models, are now among the most sought-after professionals in the industry. The belief is that a few brilliant minds can give companies a critical edge in creating advanced AI systems.
The urgency at Meta has grown owing to the delay in launching its open-source AI models and also due to the exit of some of its key staff members.
The company seems to have chosen to focus on rebuilding momentum and competing more aggressively with AI leaders worldwide. Not surprising, given the fact that the AI boom is bound to continue, such luring of talent will grow more common.
