Samsung tightens 5-day office mandate for US semiconductor staff

To ensure compliance, Samsung has rolled out a new tracking tool for managers, enabling them to view attendance data and 'time in building' metrics for each employee

Samsung is doubling down on its return-to-office mandate, particularly for employees in its US semiconductor division, by introducing stricter monitoring measures. After shifting away from its previous FlexWork model, which allowed up to two remote workdays, the company fully implemented a five-day office schedule for certain teams in July.

To ensure compliance, Samsung has rolled out a new tracking tool for managers, enabling them to view attendance data and ‘time in building’ metrics for each employee. The system is designed to curb ‘coffee badging’ a practice where staff check in briefly before leaving. While the tool will not yet integrate paid time off data or account for travel-related absences, it is intended as a first version to facilitate conversations between managers and team members about in-office expectations.

The company says early results from the stricter policy have been positive, with fuller parking lots, busier cafeterias, and more visible employee interaction. However, management maintains there is still room to improve adherence across all employee groups.

Samsung’s move mirrors a broader industry trend, with other major tech firms, including Microsoft, also scaling back remote work flexibility. For Samsung, the renewed emphasis on physical presence is aimed at creating a “consistently full campus environment” to foster real-time collaboration and drive innovation.

While exceptions for personal circumstances, travel, and business needs remain possible, employees are encouraged to communicate directly with their managers to manage any deviations from the policy. This marks the company’s third formal reminder to staff reinforcing its in-office mandate in recent months.
