TCS employee’s cancelled Diwali leave sparks outrage, company terms it ‘incorrect and false’

As Diwali approaches, a social media post has ignited widespread anger among Indian professionals after revealing how a TCS employee’s approved festive leave was abruptly cancelled by their manager. The post, shared on the Reddit community Indian Workplace, has drawn massive attention, sparking conversations around toxic workplace practices and the lack of respect for employees’ personal time in Indian corporate culture.

According to the viral post, the employee’s team lead announced that the approved leave for October 22 would now be treated as a half-day and the leave for October 23 had been cancelled altogether. The employee, who was reportedly already out of town, expressed disbelief and frustration, saying they had planned the trip well in advance and rarely took unplanned leaves.

The incident quickly resonated with thousands of social media users, many of whom shared their own stories of cancelled holidays and micromanagement during festive seasons. Several commenters described such behaviour as a reflection of “toxic managerial culture” in Indian companies, contrasting it with workplaces abroad where longer and more flexible holiday periods are common.

Many users pointed out that while Indian IT firms publicly promote employee welfare and flexibility, their internal culture often tells a different story. Others argued that such last-minute cancellations not only disrupt personal plans but also signal a deeper disregard for employee well-being.

The post has since evolved into a broader debate on work-life balance and managerial empathy in India’s corporate sector. As the country celebrates one of its biggest festivals, the viral incident serves as a stark reminder of the growing disconnect between organizational rhetoric and employees’ lived experiences.

    Company Response

In response to the viral Reddit post, a TCS spokesperson said, “The misinformation quoted by an anonymous user on Reddit, which is the source of your article, is incorrect and false.” The company did not offer further details on the specific incident but maintained that its employee policies are designed to ensure fairness and flexibility.
