The Uttar Pradesh government has stepped up efforts to strengthen its apprenticeship ecosystem, linking thousands of young people with industries and MSME units across the state. The effort is aimed at promoting employment-oriented skill development by combining classroom learning with hands-on workplace experience.

In the current financial year alone, more than 83,000 youth have been engaged as apprentices in industrial and MSME establishments. These placements span manufacturing, services and small and medium enterprises, helping participants gain practical exposure while earning during their training period. The programme aligns with the state’s broader focus on building job-ready skills and encouraging self-reliance among young workers.

The government has been using both the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme and the Chief Minister Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme to drive participation. Under these initiatives, financial support is extended to apprentices as well as to participating establishments. The reimbursement model is designed to reduce the cost burden on employers while providing income support to trainees during the apprenticeship period.

To widen access, the state has also focused on expanding the institutional base for apprenticeships. Over the past four years, nearly 800 new establishments have been registered on the apprenticeship portal, increasing opportunities across districts and improving local industry engagement. In addition, several thousand candidates have been supported under state-led apprenticeship programmes, further strengthening the pipeline of skilled youth.

The emphasis is not limited to certification but also on ensuring that training translates into real employment or self-employment outcomes. Stronger industry linkages and role-specific training are central to this approach.

Over a longer horizon, sustained skill-development initiatives have enabled more than four lakh trained youth to find opportunities in industrial units over the past nine years. Going forward, the state plans to further scale up apprenticeships by improving digital platforms, simplifying processes, and deepening collaboration with industries, staruups, and MSMEs to support long-term workforce readiness.
