Nearly 40 years after beginning his career at Tata Steel, Biswarup Goswami is taking on another full-time HR leadership assignment.
Goswami has joined ECE Industries, a BK Birla group company, as chief human resources officer (CHRO). The move is interesting partly because of what came immediately before it. His last assignment was as fractional CHRO at Intech Organics, following several years in senior HR leadership at Gujarat Heavy Chemicals Limited (GHCL).
The shift from a fractional mandate back to the CHRO chair adds another turn to a career that has moved repeatedly across sectors. Goswami has worked in steel, bearings, lighting, telecom, real estate, speciality chemicals and agrochemicals. At ECE Industries, he returns to an engineering and industrial environment, familiar territory from the earlier decades of his career.
His mandate at ECE will cover organisational culture, talent acquisition, capability building and employee engagement.
Goswami’s most recent full-time leadership chapter was at GHCL, where he served as CHRO. Before that, he was senior vice president, HR, at PI Industries and president, HR and chief transformation officer, at Laxmi Organic Industries. At Galaxy Surfactants, he handled a global people role.
The middle of his career was marked by a series of senior assignments across very different businesses. He was chief of HR at Emaar MGF Land, president, HR and CPO, at VIOM Networks, and headed HR for Bharti Airtel (AES) and Bharti Realty.
But the foundations of his career were built in manufacturing. Goswami spent six years with Philips India Lighting and nearly nine with The Timken Company after beginning his professional journey with Tata Steel in 1986.
Four decades later, the industries and titles have changed considerably. The thread running through them has been HR in businesses dealing with growth, industrial workforces and organisational change. ECE Industries now becomes the latest chapter.
