The Government of India has begun weaving Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the country’s skill-development programmes, aiming to prepare workers for technology driven jobs.
A press release by Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship reveals that at the centre of this effort is the Skill India Digital Hub (SIDH), a one stop online platform for skilling and certification. Through SIDH, the Ministry launched the SOAR programme in 2025 to build AI literacy. It started with four basic online courses and has since expanded to 50 qualifications covering AI for jobs, workplace productivity, sector specific uses, and inclusivity. By August 2026, more than 5.17 lakh learners had enrolled and over 1 lakh certified.
Under PMKVY 4.0, training now includes AI, machine learning, data science, cybersecurity, drones, EVs, and other emerging technologies. The scheme stresses industry alignment, apprenticeships, and on the job training. So far, 5.44 lakh candidates have been trained and 3.73 lakh certified in future skills roles.
The National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) is also opening doors for hands on learning in AI, robotics and green jobs. Over the past three years, more than 3,000 apprentices have been engaged in AI and machine learning roles.
Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) are being upgraded with new AI courses, including a one year AI Programming Assistant, a Generative AI course, and short micro credentials. A Rs 60,000 crore scheme, PM SETU, will modernise 1,000 ITIs with industry-led curricula in AI and other Industry 4.0 skills.
Together, these measures form a national AI skilling framework, offering pathways from basic awareness to advanced expertise. For HR leaders and employers, the message is clear: India’s workforce is being reshaped for an AI enabled future, and organisations will need to align hiring, training, and workplace practices with this new reality.
