Cancer-stricken employee fired after being denied remote work

A disturbing account has emerged on Reddit detailing how a US health-insurance company allegedly mistreated an employee battling cancer. The individual, who worked at HealthPlus Insurance as a claim analyst, claimed they were denied basic workplace accommodations after being diagnosed with stage 2 lymphoma.

Despite submitting medical documentation recommending remote work during chemotherapy, the request was rejected by the company’s HR team. The employee explained that their doctor had advised limiting exposure to infection risks, making remote work a medical necessity. Although their direct manager initially supported the request, HR allegedly refused it outright, calling remote work a ‘privilege’ and stating the role could not be done from home.

Ironically, the department had previously worked remotely during the pandemic. The final arrangement forced the employee to take unpaid medical leave on chemotherapy days, while requiring them to be in the office on others. The company claimed exemption from the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), citing an employee count below the threshold. However, the former employee later discovered the company had over 50 employees, making them subject to ADA compliance.

As the employee’s condition worsened, so did their job performance. Following a second round of chemotherapy, they were placed on a performance improvement plan(PIP) . Weeks later, they were terminated for not meeting productivity standards.

The former employee has since filed a lawsuit under the ADA, alleging wrongful termination and disability discrimination. The case has drawn public attention, especially given the company’s role in the healthcare sector. The story has sparked outrage online over how even healthcare-related businesses can fail to show compassion to their own employees when they are critically ill and in need of support.
