US House bans WhatsApp on government devices over security concerns

The US House of Representatives has officially prohibited the use of WhatsApp on all government-issued devices, citing security and data- privacy concerns. The move affects thousands of congressional employees who have banked on the messaging app for daily communication.
The decision was taken after the Office of Cybersecurity flagged the app as a high-risk platform due to unclear data-protection protocols, inadequate transparency about encryption, and potential vulnerabilities. Staff members have been instructed to uninstall WhatsApp from all official phones, computers and browsers. Checking will be done to ensure everyone removes the app from their devices.
Meta is already facing an antitrust lawsuit from the Federal Trade Commission over its acquisitions of WhatsApp and Instagram. Some feel this move to restrict the messaging app is part of an effort by the US government to tighten controls over digital communication tools used within official circles.
While WhatsApp claims to use end-to-end encryption to protect user messages, the House cybersecurity team reportedly raised concerns over metadata handling, lack of inadequate encryption for stored messages, and insufficient control over data shared through the platform. Officials also cited the app’s efforts to monetise via ads as another potential risk factor in safeguarding sensitive government communications.
This action reflects growing concerns about digital privacy, especially in platforms operated by companies under regulatory scrutiny. The ban draws attention to the evolving cybersecurity landscape and the urgent need for the government to put in place strict communication protocols within its institutions.
