Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is accelerating its shift towards an AI-led operating model with the rollout of a structured, organisation-wide programme aimed at building practical artificial intelligence (AI) skills across its workforce. The initiative is designed to ensure that AI capabilities are not limited to specialised teams but become a core competency across roles, functions and business units.

The programme focuses on moving employees beyond introductory understanding to real-world application. Learning is centred on business scenarios where AI tools and models can be applied to solve client and operational challenges. This approach reflects a clear shift in how large IT services companies are preparing their people for the next phase of digital transformation.

As part of the initiative, employees are being encouraged to participate in collaborative learning formats. These include internal innovation challenges, hackathons and short, intensive development sprints conducted at dedicated AI labs. The aim is to build hands-on confidence, promote experimentation and encourage cross-functional collaboration. By working on live problem statements, employees gain exposure to both technical and contextual aspects of AI.

Over the past year, the company has seen a sharp increase in the number of employees developing advanced AI skills. This growth mirrors rising internal demand for deeper expertise as AI adoption moves from pilot projects to large-scale execution. The programme is positioned as a way to broaden access to AI knowledge, reduce reliance on small expert groups and speed up adoption across the organisation.

The move comes at a time when Indian IT services firms face growing pressure to deliver measurable outcomes from AI investments. Clients are seeking faster delivery, smarter solutions and tangible business impact. By investing heavily in workforce capability, TCS is signalling that widespread AI fluency will be critical to staying competitive.

For HR and talent leaders, the initiative highlights a broader shift in reskilling priorities. Continuous learning, adaptability and applied technology skills are increasingly becoming baseline expectations for the entire workforce, not just for specialised technology roles.
