Notice period hike triggers resignation; employee’s one-word answer shuts down HR probing

Not wanting to be bound by a longer exit clause, the employee immediately submitted his resignation through the internal portal

A professional recently described on the subreddit Indian Workplace the exact trigger that led him to resign. The breaking point came when he learned his company would extend the mandatory notice period from the following month. Not wanting to be bound by a longer exit clause, he immediately submitted his resignation through the internal portal.

With his team leader unavailable, the floor supervisor called him in for a discussion. The conversation followed a predictable script. He was asked if there were conflicts within the team. He said no. Was there an issue with his reporting manager? No again. Was he unhappy with his salary? Not really. Had he received a better offer? Was he denied a promotion? Was he planning to switch industries? Each question was calmly dismissed.

When pressed for a clear reason, he replied with a single word: retirement.

The unexpected response ended the probing. It was not sarcasm. It was strategy. He deliberately avoided giving a reason that could invite negotiation. Mention salary, and a raise might be promised. Mention growth, and future opportunities would be discussed. Reveal a competing offer, and comparisons would begin. By offering no concrete grievance, he left no opening for counteroffers. HR later confirmed his last working day, and the process moved ahead smoothly.

Online reactions were swift. Some users argued that extending notice periods signals deeper control issues. Others shared similar experiences of resisting retention attempts despite emotional persuasion from HR.

The broader lesson is simple. When a decision to leave is firm, overexplaining can weaken resolve. Resignation does not always require a detailed justification. Sometimes clarity, brevity, and composure protect both autonomy and peace of mind.

But longer notice period in case of already working employee doesn’t become effective in his case. I doubt the legality of such a longer notice period in case of employee already in job.
It can apply only to prospective employees.

Yes. HR till yesterday was not ready will give reasons and justification which even they are not convinced. If someone wants to leave, let them with dignity.

Indian companies are enforcing slavery through notice periods. The centre must change labour laws limiting notice period to 2 weeks like in the US.
