Hindustan Zinc has launched ‘Tejaswini’, an all-women led operational team at the Leaching and Purification section of its Chanderiya Smelting Complex, marking a major step toward gender inclusion in India’s metals and mining sector. The initiative begins with a team of 30 women professionals who will manage operations across all shifts at the facility.

The Chanderiya Smelting Complex, located near Chittorgarh in Rajasthan, is one of the largest and most advanced zinc-smelting facilities in the world. Through the Tejaswini initiative, women engineers and operators will work at the centre of large-scale metallurgical processes that are critical to zinc production used across infrastructure, manufacturing and energy- transition sectors.

Women currently make up 26.3 per cent of Hindustan Zinc’s workforce, the highest representation in the metals and mining industry. The new team will handle core operational responsibilities, including process monitoring, maintenance and safety functions across key units such as Leaching & Purification–I, U-II and CLZS. The section plays an important role in the company’s hydrometallurgy operations and directly influences zinc production efficiency and quality.

The initiative is being led by Tanya Singh, plant manager – L&P I, Hydro, who will oversee the team and guide operations while maintaining the company’s safety standards.

Arun Misra, CEO and whole-time director, Hindustan Zinc, said, “At Hindustan Zinc, we believe the future of mining will be driven by diverse talent, advanced technology, and a culture of inclusion. The launch of Tejaswini reflects our commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for women in core operational roles that power industrial performance.”

Over the years, Hindustan Zinc has expanded opportunities for women across underground mining, smelting, digital control rooms and leadership positions. The company’s efforts also align with the broader diversity goal of its parent group, Vedanta Group, which aims to achieve 35 per cent women representation across its workforce.

Along with initiatives such as Tejaswini, the company has also introduced an all-women mine rescue team, expanded night-shift roles for women engineers and strengthened workplace safety systems to support a more inclusive industrial workforce.
