Meta prepares for major restructuring as layoffs and AI team shifts loom

Reports indicate that the company plans to eliminate around 8,000 jobs, representing roughly 10 per cent of its global workforce

Meta is reportedly preparing for a major workforce restructuring exercise that could affect nearly one-fifth of its employee base through a combination of layoffs and internal role shifts. The changes are expected to begin on 20 May as the company accelerates its transition toward AI-focused operations.

Reports indicate that the company plans to eliminate around 8,000 jobs, representing roughly 10 per cent of its global workforce. Alongside the layoffs, Meta is also expected to move nearly 7,000 employees into newly-created AI-focused teams as part of a broader organisational overhaul.

According to reports citing an internal memo, the restructuring effort is aimed at reducing layers of management and creating flatter organisational structures. The company is redesigning teams around smaller, faster-moving groups intended to increase agility and ownership while embedding AI-first approaches into operational structures.

Employees affected by the workforce reductions are expected to be notified through email communication sent in multiple phases based on local time zones. Reports also suggest that employees in North America were advised to work remotely ahead of the announcement period.

The restructuring forms part of Meta’s broader strategy to significantly expand investments in artificial intelligence. The company has increasingly reorganised operations around AI development, automation tools and new productivity initiatives in recent months.

Employees being reassigned are expected to join initiatives linked to AI engineering and automation-focused programmes. These teams are reportedly working on technologies designed to create AI systems capable of independently handling tasks currently managed by humans. Other groups are expected to focus on analytics and productivity measurement linked to AI development efforts.

The overhaul arrives amid reports of rising uncertainty among employees and broader discussions around workplace morale. Internal concerns have also surfaced over the company’s increasing use of AI-driven tools and monitoring systems. Reports suggest that some employees have expressed unease over technologies being introduced as Meta expands AI integration across its workforce and operations.

The company has simultaneously increased spending commitments toward AI infrastructure, signalling that workforce changes and internal restructuring are closely tied to its long-term technology priorities.
