Maharashtra is stepping up efforts to establish itself as a major artificial intelligence (AI) destination, with the state outlining plans to generate nearly 1.5 lakh AI-related jobs through technology investments and a stronger innovation ecosystem.

The vision was highlighted during the launch of ImagiNxt in Mumbai, a technology and innovation platform designed to connect startups, investors, policymakers, academic institutions, and industry stakeholders working in AI and emerging technology sectors.

The state government is positioning AI as a key driver of its future economic agenda. Alongside job creation, the strategy focuses on strengthening startup activity, building digital capabilities, and creating long-term technology-led growth opportunities.

As part of the broader plan, Maharashtra is working on expanding infrastructure for AI research and innovation. The state is also looking to strengthen startup incubation networks and introduce skill development initiatives in areas such as machine learning, robotics, automation, cloud computing, and data science.

Further plans also include specialised computing infrastructure aimed at supporting startups and enterprises developing advanced AI-led solutions.

The initiative reflects a larger competition unfolding across India, where states are increasingly trying to attract technology investments, digital infrastructure projects, and high-value employment opportunities.

The proposed ecosystem is expected to create demand across multiple job categories. Roles in AI engineering, software development, analytics, cybersecurity, cloud architecture, product management, and enterprise automation are expected to see increased opportunities.

Maharashtra already has a strong technology base, with Mumbai and Pune serving as major centres for fintech, enterprise solutions, and startup activity. Through a more structured AI-focused strategy, the state now aims to strengthen its position in India’s evolving digital economy and attract the next wave of technology-driven growth.
