Amazon’s AI push draws scrutiny as workforce cuts continue

Amazon is facing renewed scrutiny over its workforce strategy as the company continues to invest heavily in artificial intelligence (AI) while reducing its corporate headcount.

Over the past eight months, Amazon has reportedly eliminated around 30,000 corporate roles as part of CEO Andy Jassy’s efforts to simplify organisational structures, reduce layers of management and improve operational efficiency. The workforce reductions come as the company accelerates investments in AI infrastructure, including the expansion of data centres required to support advanced AI systems.

The developments have sparked internal debate about the balance between technology investments and workforce impacts. Large technology companies are increasingly prioritising AI-related spending while simultaneously reducing employee numbers to free up resources and streamline operations.

The discussion reflects a broader trend across the technology industry, where organisations are reshaping workforce strategies to align with growing AI ambitions. As competition intensifies, companies are directing significant capital towards computing infrastructure, specialised chips and AI model development, often while pursuing cost-efficiency measures in other parts of the business.

Amazon has maintained that its restructuring efforts are aimed at improving speed, accountability and decision-making across the organisation. The company has also stated that it respects employees’ rights to express their views on workplace and business issues.

The situation highlights a growing challenge facing employers: managing workforce transformation during periods of rapid technological change. As companies invest more heavily in AI, questions around job redesign, workforce planning, reskilling and organisational structure are becoming increasingly important.

The developments at Amazon underscore how AI is no longer just a technology strategy but a workforce strategy as well. Organisations across industries are being forced to make difficult decisions about resource allocation, talent deployment and future skills requirements as they seek to remain competitive in an AI-driven economy.
