Viral comedy clip leads to job loss, sparks debate on conduct outside workplace

The development has reignited debates around where employers should draw the line between personal conduct and professional accountability

A viral stand-up comedy interaction has triggered a wider conversation about employee conduct outside the workplace, organisational values and the lasting impact of online behaviour.

The controversy centres around Himanshu Jangra, a 23-year-old web developer from Gurugram, who reportedly lost his job after comments he made during a crowd work segment at comedian Pranit More’s show drew criticism online.

Clips from the performance circulated widely on social media, prompting backlash over remarks Jangra allegedly made about a date. Many users took issue with statements suggesting that spending money on a date created an expectation of something in return. The comments sparked discussions around consent, entitlement and attitudes towards relationships.

As the videos gained traction, social-media users identified Jangra as an employee of Gurugram-based design firm Starvik Design. In a public statement, the company’s founder said the organisation had received numerous messages and complaints regarding the incident.

According to the company, an internal review found that Jangra had been regarded as professional and respectful by colleagues during his tenure, with no workplace complaints against him. However, the firm stated that the public controversy had begun affecting the organisation, its employees and its reputation, ultimately leading to the decision to terminate his employment.

The development has reignited debates around where employers should draw the line between personal conduct and professional accountability. While some argue that companies have a responsibility to uphold their values and protect workplace culture, others question whether employees should face career consequences for actions unrelated to their job performance.

The incident has also highlighted the permanence of digital footprints in an era where personal remarks can quickly become public controversies. For many young professionals, the episode serves as a reminder that behaviour shared online or in public settings can shape perceptions far beyond immediate social circles.

Beyond the employment implications, the conversation has prompted broader reflection on dating norms, consent and the expectations individuals carry into personal relationships. As workplaces increasingly place emphasis on values and inclusivity, questions around accountability, proportionality and second chances are likely to remain part of the ongoing discussion.
