Ready Govt quarters remain vacant, Gujarat employees await housing allotment

More than 150 newly-built government residential quarters in Ahmedabad are lying vacant despite being ready for occupation, leaving several state employees, including those with serious medical conditions, waiting for official possession.

The unoccupied quarters are located in Shahibaug, Ranip and Navrangpura. According to reports, approvals for allotting homes to over 20 critically ill or bedridden employees were completed nearly three months ago. However, the beneficiaries are yet to receive possession of the houses.

The delay has reportedly forced several employees to continue living in rented accommodation while managing medical treatment and other financial pressures. Some employees have alleged that the distribution of the quarters has been delayed because the government is awaiting a formal inauguration ceremony.

The Gujarat Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department, however, said the housing units were only recently completed and required mandatory fire and safety clearances before they could be occupied. The department also stated that invitations have been sent to senior state dignitaries for the inauguration and that the handover process is expected to begin once the event is held.

According to the department, the inauguration could take place within the coming week, subject to confirmation from the invited dignitaries.

The issue has drawn attention to the challenges faced by government employees awaiting official accommodation, particularly those dealing with health concerns and rising housing costs. Employees have expressed concern that delays in handing over completed housing projects are adding to their financial and personal hardship.

The Roads and Buildings Department is currently under the charge of Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. While some employees have linked the delay to the pending inauguration, the department maintains that the process is being completed in accordance with administrative and safety requirements before the quarters are formally occupied.
