US retailer Target Corporation has said that 40 per cent of its global technology workforce is based in Bengaluru, underscoring the Indian centre’s growing role in the company’s AI and digital transformation initiatives.
Target India employs around 5,700 people across technology, merchandising, store design, marketing and finance. The company continues to strengthen its talent pipeline through campus hiring and apprenticeship programmes, with around 35 per cent of apprentices converting to full-time employees.
The retailer is also re-architecting its technology and data ecosystem to support an AI-first operating model. According to the company, the transition is focused on reskilling employees, redesigning workflows and accelerating digital transformation rather than reducing headcount.
Artificial intelligence is being deployed across several business functions, including product design, supply chain management, in-store order fulfilment and customer experience. The company said the use of AI has significantly shortened apparel design-to-market timelines while improving operational efficiency through predictive modelling and digital simulations.
To support responsible AI adoption, Target has established a governance framework that evaluates AI use cases, oversees contracts and manages compliance and risk associated with AI deployment.
The developments reflect Target’s continued investment in technology talent in India, with Bengaluru serving as a key hub for the company’s global engineering, AI and digital capabilities.
