The Ministry of Civil Aviation has stated that the workforce structure at Air India is now more aligned with private-sector performance standards following the airline’s transition to private ownership under the Tata Group.
Responding to a question in thr Parliament, the Ministry said the airline has implemented several organisational and staffing changes since its privatisation. These steps were aimed at improving operational efficiency and modernising the company’s talent base. Measures introduced include fresh recruitment, revised employment contracts and voluntary exit options designed to reshape the workforce and build a more performance-driven culture.
According to the government, the employee profile at the airline has gradually shifted towards a younger and more skills-oriented workforce. This transition reflects efforts to bring the organisation closer to evolving global aviation standards and improve service capabilities.
The Ministry also highlighted policy adjustments introduced by the airline to strengthen operational stability. These include changes to retirement age for certain roles and the implementation of stricter operational procedures to improve productivity and service delivery.
Air India returned to the Tata Group in January 2022 after nearly seven decades of government ownership. Since then, the airline has been undergoing a major transformation programme that focuses on expanding its fleet, upgrading technology systems and restructuring its organisational framework.
The government noted that these initiatives form part of a broader strategy to rebuild the airline’s competitiveness and enable it to respond more effectively to market demands in the global aviation industry.
