Amazon is preparing to reduce its corporate workforce over the coming years as it focuses more on generative artificial intelligence and AI-powered tools. The tech giant is pushing for automation and efficiency, signalling a shift that may reshape the nature of white-collar work across the company.
Internal communication shared with employees outlines a future where smaller, more agile teams are supported by AI systems that streamline operations. The company expects that many current roles will become obsolete, while new kinds of jobs—particularly those focused on AI deployment and oversight—will emerge in their place. As a result, the corporate headcount will be reduced.
This shift in focus follows a wave of layoffs at Amazon over the last few years. In 2022, the company cut 27,000 roles, and additional job reductions have followed in 2023 and 2024. The latest message is seen as a strategic signal that further reductions are ahead, driven not by financial struggles but by technology-induced transformation.
Across the broader tech industry, AI is already taking over tasks that were traditionally performed by junior developers and operations staff. At some leading companies, up to 30 per cent of coding is now handled by AI. The worry is whether lucrative, entry-level tech jobs may become scarce.
As AI continues to evolve, it is clear that companies such as Amazon consider it a core driver of productivity. For employees, especially those in traditional corporate functions, this is a new era of uncertainty—where adaptability, reskilling and a deep understanding of AI tools may end up being the key to staying relevant.
