The Andhra Pradesh government has announced a fresh relaxation of childcare leave rules for state government employees, widening eligibility and removing age-related conditions in a move aimed at offering greater flexibility to working parents and caregivers.
Under the revised guidelines, employees will now be able to avail childcare leave without any upper age limit for children. The benefit will also extend to children with disabilities, allowing employees to use the leave whenever caregiving needs arise, rather than being restricted by age thresholds. Eligible employees can avail the leave at any stage of their service, subject to the overall entitlement prescribed under the rules.
In a significant shift towards inclusivity, the updated policy extends childcare leave to single male employees. Widowers, divorcees and unmarried fathers employed by the state government will now be eligible for the benefit, recognising that caregiving responsibilities are not limited by gender. Earlier, childcare leave was largely restricted to women employees.
Childcare leave for Andhra Pradesh government staff was introduced with limited scope and has been gradually expanded over the years. At present, employees are entitled to a maximum of six months of childcare leave, which can be availed in multiple spells across their service tenure, depending on personal and family requirements.
Reportedly, the latest easing of norms reflects the government’s intent to support work-life balance and respond to changing social and family structures.
The move acknowledges the challenges faced by employees who juggle professional duties alongside caregiving responsibilities.
Policy observers note that Andhra Pradesh is among a growing number of states reworking public-sector leave policies to better align employee welfare with contemporary workforce realities, while maintaining administrative flexibility and continuity of services.
