The Assam government has approved a 2 per cent increase in dearness allowance (DA) and dearness relief (DR) for state government employees and pensioners, benefiting more than eight lakh people across the state.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the Assam Cabinet and announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. With the latest revision, the DA and DR rates will increase from 58 per cent to 60 per cent. The enhanced rates will come into effect from July, and eligible employees and pensioners will receive the revised benefits accordingly.

Announcing the decision, the Chief Minister said the government remains committed to the welfare of its workforce and pensioners, recognising their contribution to the state’s development. He noted that government employees and retirees continue to play an important role in Assam’s growth journey.

The increase is expected to offer some relief to households facing higher living expenses and inflationary pressures. Dearness Allowance is provided to government employees to help offset the impact of rising prices, while Dearness Relief serves a similar purpose for pensioners.

According to the state government, more than eight lakh beneficiaries, including serving employees and retired personnel, will gain from the latest revision.

The move is part of a series of measures undertaken by state governments across India to periodically revise DA and DR rates in line with changing economic conditions. Such revisions are closely watched by employees’ associations and pensioners, as they directly affect take-home income and post-retirement financial security.

With the latest increase, Assam has reiterated its focus on employee welfare and social protection, while providing additional financial support to a large section of its workforce and retired citizens.
