Coal India (CIL) is rolling out a new uniform dress code for its employees from July 2025, marking a significant shift in workplace attire for the country’s largest coal producer. It is hoped that the decision, approved by the company’s board in a recent meeting, will create a sense of uniformity, enhancing professional appearance, and reinforcing the organisation’s identity across its operations.
Under the new scheme, male employees will wear navy blue trousers paired with sky blue shirts. The women in the workforce will have two options to choose from: a light sky-blue kurta with a dark navy-blue salwar and dupatta, or a light sky blue saree with a dark navy blue border and a matching blouse. This change will be implemented across CIL and its subsidiaries, covering approximately 2.25 lakh employees.
Each employee will receive an advance of Rs 500 to purchase three pairs of the prescribed uniform. The company has also planned to review the effectiveness and implementation of the dress code after a year.
The move is part of an effort to improve consistency in employee presentation and to cultivate a cohesive workplace identity, which aligns with CIL’s public- sector stature. Uniforms are expected to foster a stronger sense of belonging and discipline among staff, especially in a sector where branding and unity are increasingly seen as essential for internal culture and external perception.
This is the first time Coal India is adopting a standardised dress code for its diverse and widespread workforce. It indicates a fresh approach to employee engagement and professional representation within the organisation.
