Employee asked to share live location on sick leave sparks online backlash

A Reddit post describing an employee being asked to share his live location after applying for sick leave has ignited widespread criticism online, with many users calling the demand invasive and reflective of unhealthy workplace practices.

According to the post, the employee had taken sick leave after experiencing a severe headache. When the condition persisted the following day, he requested an extension of his leave. The situation escalated when his supervisor asked him to coordinate with HR, which in turn requested medical proof. After the employee relayed this exchange back to his manager, he was reportedly asked to share his real-time location via WhatsApp.

The employee shared screenshots of the conversation and expressed concern over what refusing the request may lead to, triggering a strong response from the Reddit community. Many users questioned the legitimacy of such a demand, arguing that asking for live location access crosses personal boundaries and has no relevance to verifying illness.

Commenters described the incident as an example of excessive monitoring and mistrust. Several pointed out that medical conditions such as headaches cannot always be substantiated through documents, making the demand unreasonable. Others warned that agreeing to such requests could normalise surveillance beyond work hours, eroding employee privacy.

The discussion also resurfaced memories of a similar incident shared on the same forum last year. In that case, an employee alleged being verbally reprimanded by a bank manager despite submitting medical prescriptions for a serious condition. The employee was reportedly accused of avoiding work and threatened with salary deductions.

Together, the incidents have fuelled a broader debate about workplace culture, particularly around sick leave. Social-media users highlighted a growing pattern of employees being treated with suspicion when seeking medical time off, often facing pressure to over-explain or prove their illness.
